AGMARK
AGMARK stands for Agricultural Marketing,
and it serves as a certification mark used on agricultural products in India to
assure consumers of their quality, purity, and standardization. It is a symbol
of trust that represents compliance with the stringent standards and
specifications set by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI), which
functions under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of
India. The certification derives its legal backing from the Agricultural
Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1937, which was enacted to promote the
grading and standardization of agricultural commodities. The AGMARK
certification process involves several stages of testing, inspection, and
grading. Producers or traders who wish to obtain AGMARK certification must
apply to the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection. Samples of their products
are tested in AGMARK-recognized laboratories, where they undergo scientific
evaluation to ensure conformity with government-approved standards. These
laboratories analyze the product’s physical and chemical characteristics, check
for contaminants or adulteration, and verify packaging and labeling
requirements. Only after the product passes all quality checks is the AGMARK label
granted, signifying that it meets the defined grade specifications.
